My dream of Polaroid camera

Polaroid is a type of an analog camera that allows developing pictures right after taking them. All thanks to the film package places under the device. Its good fame started around 1990, when they became really popular, but later on they were defeated by the growing interest in digital cameras. So why they are returning nowadays? Why would anyone pay so much for the old, used cameras and expensive films when you can save all moments by digital cameras, DSLRs and smartphones? Is it only a hipster toy or maybe a real treasure for the enthusiasts of photography and people being passionate about this topic?
I remember when I was a child and I used to see Polaroids in the American movies and I envied the fact that right after the shot, they were taking out a developed print. For that time the only possibility of having prints in your hands was to go to the photo store with the film from the standard analog camera, but there was a risk of overexposing them while taking out - or at least that's what happened with my trip to Prague when I was in the primary school. Polaroids were just different than that, interesting and unique! They were like a substitute of a carefree life in the USA, they reminded me models while castings and a bit blurry view on Hollywood Hills. I don't know precisely what was a reason for it, but this camera became an inseparable element of my dream list. It was unfilled until now.
While holding in hands my own Polaroid camera that I've received from R. as a gift, I couldn't imagine that my dream has finally come true.

So if you're interested by this topic, but you're wondering: how to take pictures with Polaroid? Is there any profit of having that type of camera? And where to buy films? Read more. :-)

Is Polaroid only for hipsters?

In the era of omnipresent digital cameras, which are often fitting in our pocket, a purchase of an old camera seems just silly. What's more, the films are lasting only for a few (over a dozen sometimes) pictures and often are... more expensive than the camera itself (speaking of the used ones). The quality isn't the sharpest and it can happen that our picture will be blurred or will have some light leaks, and that wouldn't be a cheap mistake for us. Isn't it a small paranoia? Some people say it's a useless gadget, other's say that it's a great fun. Of course, I'm in the second group. For me all of those imperfections are truly magical, and hide some secret, because we are never sure how they will turn out to be. The anticipation for the picture to show up isn't a problem either (usually lasts for around 30 minutes in the dark place like a pocket or camera cover etc.). And even though I realized that my budget wouldn't allow me to buy a few films at once, and I wouldn't be able to photograph my whole journey only with a polaroid, I treat this camera as an interesting thing and the "saver" of those best, most precious moments.

Where to buy films for Polaroid camera?

Most of all in the internet (for example ebay, amazon). In contrary to the opinion that you can only buy the expired films, the photo-stores are offering new, diversified films depending on your needs. For example black and white or with colorful frames. Polaroid films can also be found on the auction portals or in second-hand stores. You need to be careful to fit your film to the correct camera model. My standard Polaroid works with the 600 type of films. Others can work with instax mini (wide and looking like photo-booth shots) or instax wide (wider).
Standard price for a package of 600 type film (containing 8 pictures) is around 20euros.

How to take pictures with Polaroid?

My model is Close-up 636 working with 600 type of films. It looks quite compact and after opening you will see the flash and lens. While deciding what to photograph you can choose between two modes - a picture far away or macro which works with portraits. Except of that, you can set your photo to be brighter or darker - but I usually don't use this. You put the films in the special pocket down under and they already contain the battery so you don't charge your camera. There's no chance to just add a separate films, so the film set must not be opened before using. The trigger is located on the side - by pressing until a half you make a non-flash picture, and by pressing it until the end - with the flash. After making the picture you should store it in possibly dark place and wait around 30 minutes for the picture to develop. Sooner exposing to the sun rays may cause its damage.
