If you're planning a trip to the Austrian city of Graz, surely the main point of your online search will be to check out the possible tourist attractions, interesting places and surroundings where you will spend time out in the nature. Those were also my first steps before the arrival, but the problem is that in addition to good restaurants and hipsters cafes, online guides of Graz speak very little about the surroundings and above all, the beautiful nature. Yes, you will often find the information about the famous Schöckl mountain (about 40 minutes drive from Graz) or the numerous cycling paths (including the downhill), but it is equally as exploratory as suggesting the local nature of the city park.
Do not get me wrong, the city park is obviously also worth a visit, but it's rather mountainous hikes and interesting views that are what a lot of tourists are looking for in Graz. Especially if it is combined with a visit to a small local restaurant serving fresh Austrian specialties. In the end, nothing motivates for some long walks like dessert, which is waiting for us at the top.Plabutsch Mountain is located in the city, so you will not need any long or complicated commute. In my opinion, this is definitely a must see place in Graz - read on to find out more about this place.

Plabutsch Mountain

Although this mountain is not known of its impressive height (754 m.n.m), the view from the summit is definitely worth seeing - especially since the restaurant that is there is additionally equipped with a special lookout tower, which you will enter for free. Plabutsch is part of the so-called Lavanttaler Alps  (in German Lavanttaler Alpen), also called the Noric Alps - but Plabutsch is not their highest peak.
Plabutsch is, in my opinion, a great option for a weekend walk, as routes - depending on our ability - are easy or medium. You can reach the summit by bike or even by car and park it just by the restaurant. And even though I've chosen a traditional stroll, on the way I happened to me to have to pass a rocky path up. However, when you do not go off the trail, the whole way is easy going and you will enjoy the sights.

Local restaurant on the top of Plabutsch mountain

Once you reach the top, you will see the restaurant Mausser, famous for its variety of apple products. The offer includes Most, the equivalent of the cider (in two versions: Mausser Most and Steiermost -  from the region of Styria, where Graz is located). In addition, you can buy ecological and local juices, alcohols and my favorite apple tiramisu! If you ever get to the top of Plabutsch, remember my recommandations and give that dessert a try and I promise you will not regret it.

Stay overnight at Plabutsch

The vision of a wild camping at the top would be tempting, but the more civilized options definitely outweigh this time, as the restaurant itself is also a small hotel or rather a Gasthaus, as the Austrians call it. Waking up at dawn and admire the sunrise from the summit is something that will surely encourage more than one traveler to spend the night there.

Say hello to the deer

Interesting point on Plabutsch is also a farm where you will meet deer. They have a very large area to which tourists do not have access. However, you can admire them when they walk around or lie in the shade. It also happens that they come close to the fence, giving you a chance to look at them closely. Because of their safety they should not be fed - let's leave it to their owners.

How to get to Plabutsch by car and bicycle

The city center is approximately 8 km (25 minutes) away from Plabutsch and you can reach the mountain from both: Lend and Gösting via B67, as well as Wetselsdorf and Eggenberg. Coming through the small town of Thal (where Arnold Schwarzenegger was born and lived) the road will take us about 10km. The road for cyclists will take about 40-60 minutes depending on our pace - but it's worth pointing out that driving uphill is not as easy as it sounds.
