Grüner See - disappearing Austrian lake
The lake that exists and then disappears - Grüner See in a nutshell. Recognized as one of Austria's most beautiful diving spots, Grüner See is sure to delight many travelers. For me, this place was even more special because I could see it for the first time in the company of my mum and Ola, who came to Austria for my invitation.List of places, which I would like to visit in Austria seems to grow from day to day, so this time I've combined pleasant with useful and for a week of their visit, I've turned into a guide, showing them my favorite places in the city and the surrounding area. Grüner See became our weekend trip, and during our visit the weather fit perfectly into the time frame! We doubted whether it was smart to go there while it started raining during the way, but when it cleared up just after our arrival, we knew it was a sign and that we would be able to get a bit of a glimpse. But why Grüner See is so special? And why is it disappearing?Read on.

How to reach Grüner See?

The lake is located in Austria in the municipality of Tragöß in Styria (Steiermark). It is best to get there by car. One car park is available before reaching the lake, but it's paid, and the other one is free of charge, which is located by a local restaurant, and you can try local specialties by the way.
The route from Graz takes about 80km (less than an hour's drive) via S35 (fast traffic).

Diseappearing Grüner See

The phenomenon of the lake is quite simple - the lake is formed by snow melting in the area and accumulates gradually by changing its surface. Spring water also floods the surrounding meadows, making it an incredible place for divers who can admire underwater benches and grass. Unfortunately, by the protection of nature for the moment diving and swimming in the lake is forbidden.
In summer the lake is still present, but gradually decreases with temperature. It is worth to see it all because the whole area is beautiful and green. The surrounding forests have many paths, and you can make a picnic and admire the lakeside's nature. While sitting by the shore we will also see mountains from the Hochschwab range.

A walk by the lake

Neighborhood is definitely worth the attention! If it were not for the weather and the clouds gathering over us, we would have been there longer. Fortunately I plan to have another visit here, and this time I count on better weather. Living in the city bustle it is good to break out once in a while and appreciate the beauty of nature, which in Austria is possible almost everywhere. Every time the views like these delight me again and I am glad that I can live in such a beautiful country. This joy is even greater when I can share it with my loved ones. The visit of Ola and my mum made me very happy and I was trying to show them Austria's best side.

Gasthof Grüner See

For the hungry ones you will surely find something at Gasthof by the lake. They mainly serve typical Austrian cuisine - the menu also includes schnitzel and other meat dishes which are quite heavy. Do not look for exquisite dishes there because they are quite simple. We went there for coffee, tea and desserts. We ordered pancakes with ice cream and Mohr and Hemd, a chocolate cake with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. As it was a tourist spot, the prices were not the lowest, but it was worth it!
