During the trip I often browse Instagram to see some insider's tips about places to visit and interesting restaurants to try out. During one of those times, I found not only a nice place, but a whole city that caught my attention - it meant that we had to change the roadtrip's route to see it! In the end, who would say no to those beautiful striped houses in Costa Nova (Aveiro), Portugal.
When I'm looking at those beautiful holiday's photos, I still can't believe how fast our amazing summer turned into the cold fall. When the world outside the window doesn't encourage you to step outside, it's good to recall some summer trips to feel the good vibes again. And if you're looking for some summer inspirations, then continue reading about my visit in Portuguese Aveiro.

Striped beach houses at Costa Nova

If a fairy-tale town exist, it would definitely be Aveiro. Located in Portugal, it's well known for its special neighborhood Costa Nova, where you will see a particular housing style. Except of their shapes, like taken straight from the elves' little village, they're all candy-colored and striped. Wooden, painted surfaces, old-school window shutters and cute porches - all of that it's a mixture of the most beautiful place I've seen during the portuguese roadtrip. And even the crowds didn't destroy the beauty of this spot.

Aveiro had the most beautiful beaches I've seen in Portugal

Aveiro is not only a district of colorful cottages that seem to be taken straight from the movies. You will also find beautiful sandy beaches located near the famous striped huts. If you are looking for a place to rest from the busy cities, you enjoy surfing, lounging on the beach, but you also depend on the access to the city: Aveiro has everything you need.
During our stay we've rented a half of a large house so we could enjoy the breakfasts on the terrace and the sunset on the local beach that we had in a walking distance. Aveiro, which we have visited quite unexpectedly, remained in my memory as a truly beautiful and unique place.

Portuguese colorful houses

The famous striped houses in Costa Nova are not only local residential homes but also a complex of small, family hotels, Airbnb rooms and restaurants. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to stay in such a unique place for a while. But it makes me wonder, if their interiors are also worth seeing? :-)

Costa Nova: cottages, fish market, churros and Tremoços

Small towns with access to the sea are in Portugal a true paradise for fish and seafood lovers. Walking through Costa Nova in Aveiro, we also came across a market where local vendors offered fresh shrimp, octopuses, shells and more. Sweet pastries, churros and irreplaceable Pastel de Nata will also be there for you (I still think of trying out the recipe to make my own Pastel de Nata!). A fun fact is that many of the bakeries also feature a characteristic yellow bean - they are yellow lupine seeds and are called Tremoços. This is a delicacy that the Portuguese people like to eat: it is suitable for eating alone or as a snack for beer. The package costs about 2 euros. Personally, I will not become one of the Tremoços fans, because the taste was strange and bitter in my opinion.

Is it worth visiting Aveiro?

Yes and no. Although my response may be a bit surprising after I positively commented this place and the local striped houses. However, I need to clarify my doubts. If I had to spend in Aveiro or Costa Nova the whole holiday (or their substantial part) that would definitely be boring. Despite the fact that the views are really beautiful and the cottages are lovely, it would not be enough after a few days. There's not too much to discover. I'm not a type of traveler who likes to sit for two or three weeks in one place. I often change cities, locations, I check where I like it the most. So Costa Nova was our stop for two days to enjoy the sandy beach, see the promenade with cabins and move on to explore other Portuguese cities. So for a short stop: Aveiro would be worth visiting! But for a longer holiday: definitely not.
