Austria has it, that it's beautiful at any time of the year. Therefore, even if you have already been in a certain region in the summer, the route will not get bored, because in the winter it gains some charm (and difficulties, by the way). The fact of living in Austria does not mean, however, that we climb to the house through the slopes, and ski down to work - Graz is located on quite flat terrain, thanks to which my daily commute to work by bike, although still healthy and sporty, is not a big effort.
However, the whole magic of the mountains starts nearby, and it's enough to drive for 30-60 minutes to find ourselves in a completely different surroundings. Higher hills and the Alps begin out there. too. Here, in the little town called Mixnitz, located about 35 km from Graz, we discovered a new winter trekking route at the top of the Hochlantsch mountain (1720m) at the weekend. Although the height can't really compete with the Alps, it is the highest mountain in the Graz region.
Read on to learn more about this place and get inspired to your own wanderings.

Mixnitz - a place for trekking in summer and winter

Mixnitz is a great place for all trekking enthusiasts, thanks to the beautiful surroundings and the Bärenschützklamm waterfall that I have already visited in the summer. The normal route consists of many connected ladders, on which you slowly climb to the top. In winter, however, it is safer to choose a second, flatter route that you will defeat at about the same time. You can get anywhere without a problem and without a map, following the arrows on a well-marked route. It is worth noting, however, that where there are "no entry plates" (such as to the ladders mentioned earlier in winter), it is better to use common sense and not tempt fate. Other routes will be equally beautiful and adapted to current weather conditions.
On the way, we will also pass small restaurants (gasthauses) - one of them is located on the bottom of the Bärenschützklamm, and two more on the mountain. It is worth remembering that these two on the mountain are closed in the winter.

Trekking in the Austrian mountains

Every time we go on a winter trekking, we check the route as close as possible to Graz. A long journey is the last thing we need when we return home tired - a long car ride is not the most pleasant thing. The location of Mixnitz is therefore ideal. However, it is worth remembering not to go uphill too late and experience the badweather conditions - evenings are foggy with poor visibility, in addition, it gets dark quickly and without headlamps and without proper attire the return can be problematic, if not dangerous. It's best to start the route as soon as possible to reach the summit and return before dark.

Our winter trekking was a perfect opportunity for me to test out my new hardshell jacket from Mammut. It was perfect!

Hochlantsch - the highest peak in the region of Graz

As I mentioned earlier, the top of the Hochlantsch mountain is only 1720m, but it is the highest mountain in the region of Graz. I did not expect, however, that the whole trip would be so time-consuming. The total time for entry and descent reached us at 6:45h (with a pretty fast return speed). Certainly, the snow slowed us down, but from what I heard, in the summer times are also similar due to the large number of tourists.
So it is worth to pack with you some food and water for the trekking (although at some point on the route you can use a clean, drinkable source and fill the bottles). And in the summer, try local specialties from the mountain restaurants.
The route is not difficult, but it's good to be careful, look at your feet and have a telephone and first aid kit with you.

Even though the views were magnificent, we needed to rush a bit to go down. The fog was incoming, and the sun was setting already. I think this place is equally beautiful in the summer.

Comeback with the headlamps wasn't the easiest one, but the views made it up for us.
